Áras Éanna is Europe’s most westerly Arts Centre located on the smallest of the Aran Islands, Inis Oírr.
Situated in a former weaving factory, Áras Éanna is a multi functioning arts space that includes an artists studio space, a 75 seat theatre, two galleries, a café & various rooms & spaces for workshops & classes.
Because of the latest level three Coronavirus restrictions, Aras Éanna Arts Centre has closed down again (October 2020) but we have an exciting programme of live events that we will broadcast on Facebook Live on Áras Éanna Ionad Ealaíne page.
Calls for artist in residence (in abstentia)
Áras Éanna are delighted to announce three Artist in Residence (in absentia) opportunities during these strange times of the Coronavirus pandemic in partnership with Ealáin na Gaeltachta, Galway County Council Arts Office and Galway City Arts Office.
As the Artist in residence on Inis Oírr is an integral part of our programme we are offering artists the opportunity to create work, albeit from their own home or studio and with the spirit and inspiration of the Inis Oírr in mind. Although the artist cannot visit the island, we propose to provide a local Inis Oírr person as an artist’s assistant who through smart phone and internet could work with the artist on documenting, photographing and researching any aspect of the island that the artist may need for the creation of their work (i.e. photos/video on smartphone of stone walls, Live facetime on island location like skies, waves, fauna. Getting relevant historical information to help with the artists research for the creation of their Art.)
There are many island residents with varied talents to choose from in selecting an artist’s assistant. Depending on the artist’s proposal for the work they hope to create during the residency (in absentia) and the discipline involved (painting, textiles, sculpture, dance etc.) we will choose the most relevant person willing to work as the artist’s assistance with the mutual consent of the artist and the stakeholders.
Most importantly as part of this residency Áras Éanna will schedule a visit for the successful artists to Inis Oírr to present their work to the public at our gallery and spend some time exploring and absorbing the islands natural beauty, community and hospitality when the Coronavirus restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so. Áras Éanna will cover ferry transport and accommodation costs.
